My Interesting Stuff Page
OK, basically this is a "miscellaneous" page for stuff I thought you might like but doesn't really fit under a page of its own.
Videos
A Day In Pompeii (8:39) - A very well made animation showing the destruction of Pompeii. A lot of detail here. I've been to this site in 2007.
A Day Made With Glass (5:33) - Corning's vision for the future made with specialty glass. Very interesting. Then watch the continuation below.
A Day Made With Glass 2 (5:59) - The vision continues. For an expanded version with a narrator explaining the technology, watch this version (11:24).
Airport (9:50) - Forget your model train set, this has it beat by a mile. These planes actually take off and land!
Best of Stefan Pabst's 3D Drawings (3:00) - You'll never believe what this artist can do.
Budweiser Clydesdale Commercials (7:51) - These are just fantastic. The ad agency that comes up with these has to be one of the best.
Carleton Showband - In my opinion these guys were one of the best Canadian bands. They were the house band for 11 years from 1967 on "The Pig 'n' Whistle", one of the highest rated shows on CTV. Their career spanned 1964 to 1996 when they retired (some have passed away now.) I managed to attend some of their concerts when they played in Halifax. I have a number of their vinyl record albums, one which is autographed by all the band members at that time. (It was on a date night at a Carleton Showband concert that they did a cover of a song by the Statler Brothers. We liked their version of the song so decided it would be our first waltz at our wedding reception. Unfortunately the Carleton Showband had not recorded it so we had to use the Statler's original.)
Videos: 1993 Savoy Theatre, Cape Breton (3:17)
Audio Only: Ballad of Biddy McGraw (2:11) Nancy Whiskey (2:18) Kilgarry Mountain (2:13)
For more great Carlton Showband music, see the variety of postings on YouTube here.
Climbing a 1700-ft Antenna Tower (7:47) - If you don't suffer from vertigo, watching this might give it to you. Watch at your own risk!
Coolest Guy At the Boat Ramp (2:01) - This is a neat truck ... er, boat ... er, whatever!
Dakuwaqa's Garden (4:49) - "Underwater footage shot whilst scuba diving in the Fiji islands and Tonga. Featuring colorful coral reefs, huge schools of tropical fish, sharks, humpback whales, underwater caves, scuba divers and much more marine life from the south Pacific." Almost 30 million views in just over four years.
Doggy Christmas (3:19) - Cute video about a group of dogs.
Doggy Summer (3:39) - The dogs are back, this time at the beach!
Don't Knock the Ox (13:18) - This is a bit of nostalgia from my younger days. In my childhood and teen years I would visit the annual farmers' fair ("exhibition" to us locals) held in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia (10 miles from home) and one of the highlights of the fair was the International Ox Pulling competition. The perpetually unresolved question was whether our local head yoke which relied on the ox's neck strength was better than the American neck yoke which relied on the ox's shoulder strength. Ours were definitely more decorative and they were individually carved to fit the horns of each ox, and new yokes would have to be made occasionally as the oxen grew. This is a 1970 National Film Board short film on this competition. The competition is still held at the fair each July although the American teams no longer compete.
Fantastic Bartenders (1:58) - This is TGI Friday's bar in Manchester, England (I have friends near there.) Can you believe what these people can do? Watch the guy with the fan! (Some comments seem to think it's fake but you decide.)
Father Ray Kelly (5:16) - This starts out looking like a normal Catholic wedding but wait a minute ... yes just 60 seconds ... and then watch the priest ... and turn up your speakers!
How Do You Move A Large Tree? (3:05) - You need this truck!
International Space Station Tour (25:05) - "In her final days as Commander of the International Space Station, Sunita Williams of NASA recorded an extensive tour of the orbital laboratory just hours before she, cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and Flight Engineer Aki Hoshide of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency departed in their Soyuz TMA-05M spacecraft for a landing on the steppe of Kazakhstan. The tour includes scenes of each of the station's modules and research facilities with a running narrative by Williams of the work that has taken place and which is ongoing aboard the orbital outpost."
Kindergarteners Playing Guitar (3:29) - These North Korean kids are fantastic. Big guitars for little children!
Le Petit Chef (3:04) - "The world's smallest chef turns your plate into a projected grill." After your meal, how about the dessert? (3:10)
Liebherr Heavy Equipment (9:13) - The commentary is in German and it takes about 2½ minutes to really get interesting but you won't believe what this operator does with this big backhoe.
Mog's Christmas Calamity (3:20) - Sainsbury's is the 2nd largest supermarket chain in the UK and this was their Christmas commercial for 2015. "Mog sets off a chain of unfortunate events which almost ruin Christmas for the Thomas family. Can she pull it all back to save the day?" For a behind-the-scenes look at this production, see this video.
Mongolian School Bus TARDIS (2:32) - I guarantee you will watch this more than once. (For those of who were not Dr. Who fans, the Tardis was his spaceship that was much bigger on the inside than it was on the outside!)
Monty Hall Problem (5:48) - This is a logic teaser - I bet you would not guess the correct answer. The explanation is interesting.
NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Mission (6:33) - The "Spirit" was launched in 2003. This is a unique video of the mission from launch to landing ... a mix of computer animation with live video from mission control.
National Automobile Museum (9:21) - Mulhouse, France. It has the world's largest collection of Bugatti Automobiles. These are some wonderful cars.
Neel Kolhatkar - Neel is an Indo-Australian comedian/actor/writer from Sydney, Australia and he has produced a series of YouTube videos that I think you will find interesting (if not a bit scary.) "The potential dangers of a hypersensitive culture bred by social media and political correctness." You might want to check out his YouTube channel ... he now has a lot of videos.
Norwegian Royal Guard (8:27) - A military precision routine (and it's done on ice.)
Packing for Vacation (1:22) - Can you get this much stuff in one small suitcase?
Russian Dashboard Cameras (4:20) - You may want to stay off the roads if you ever go to Russia!!!
Samsung "Safety Truck" (2:00) - OK, I can see how this could be really useful but realistically now, do you think you would ever see this on the road? I'll give three reasons why not ... 1) it's bound to be expensive to install, 2) it's probably too easy to get damaged (accidentally or vandalized), and 3) there's no way to make money from it!
Scotland with Danny MacAskill (7:43) - It's a toss up whether you will focus more on the scenery or Danny's incredible bicycle riding. Follow him on a journey from Edinburgh back to his hometown Dunvegan, in the Isle of Skye. If you want to see more, go here and select Video in the menu. DON'T TRY THESE AT HOME!
Singing Dog (1:02) - Can your dog sing and play the piano?
Small Apartment (5:08) - Ninety square foot apartment in New York - only $700/month (in 2011) ... apparently that's a bargain one block from Central Park.
Synchronized Fireworks Show (8:59) - This has got to be the best fireworks show you've ever seen! OK, it is too good to be true - it isn't real - it's all computer generated. It's created with a computer program called FWsim (Fireworks Simulator).
The Diamonds (2:00 + 2:31) - "The Diamonds" topped the charts with "Little Darlin'" in 1957. Then 47 years later they appeared in 2004 on a PBS television special. Here are both videos - the "old guys" still got it.
The Jeep Job (3:54) - Watch as a team of Canadian soldiers dismantle and reassemble a Willys jeep in record time. (For those who don't know, this was recorded on a street here in Halifax - Spring Garden Road, I think ... exact year not known but was posted in 2010. This is obviously a specially modified Jeep. Two army teams performed this act as a race against each other during performances of the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo held the first week of July each year. This team apparently took the act out onto the street for the public.) Click here for more YouTube videos from the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo.
The Josephus Problem (13:57) - If you are a math whiz, here's an interesting little problem for when you have nothing better to do. At least I found it an interesting puzzle and the solution does make sense - you can ignore the "binary" part of the explanation - it's more understandable in normal math. Time to dust off your advanced algebra! He'll explain it in the video but this is the short synopsis from the Wikipedia explanation:
"The problem is named after Flavius Josephus, a Jewish historian living in the 1st century. According to Josephus' account of the siege of Yodfat, he and his 40 soldiers were trapped in a cave by Roman soldiers. They chose suicide over capture, and settled on a serial method of committing suicide by drawing lots. Josephus states that by luck or possibly by the hand of God, he and another man remained until the end and surrendered to the Romans rather than killing themselves."
The problem is that one person wants to survive so the trick is to figure out mathematically what position in the circle would guarantee that outcome, when each person around the circle in turn kills the person to his left until only one is left.
Toy Trains (4:35) - Do you remember playing with toy trains as a child (you may have if you are a guy) but I bet your toys were nothing like these!
Voices of Lunenburg County - Evelyn and Perry Veinot (7:28) - "Evelyn & Perry Veinot recount stories of scything, haymaking and oxen in Lunenburg County, NS.
Voices of Lunenburg County - Gordon Lohnes Shoes Oxen (9:05) - The late "Gordon Lohnes owned & worked with oxen for more than 70 years in his native Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. Here is a bit of his wisdom."
Voices of Lunenburg County - Ox Team Talk (8:34) - Chris Huntington chats with Leo Bolivar in this clip from the series "Voices of Lunenburg County". Leo is 80 (at the time of this video in 2011) and has raised and trained about 500 pairs of oxen in his lifetime. This brings back some memories as I had a cousin who raised oxen.
Voices of Lunenburg County - Scythe Mowing a Meadow (5:57) - Gordon Lohnes and Perry Veinot demonstrate the art of using a scythe on a shore meadow in Lunenburg, NS. Both are around 90 years old (at the time of this video, presumed about 2011,) but can still mow with the best. This is an old art. I tried it a few times (we had a scythe at home that belonged to my Grandfather) but it takes skill to get the "swing" just right. I kept hooking into the ground!
Voices of Lunenburg County - Water Mill in Lunenburg County (12:40) - It's interesting to see how lumber was sawn in times past. This was Ivan Corkum's water powered sawmill on the Windsor Road in Chester. Ivan is my 4th cousin twice removed.
What a Guitar! (4:31) - Yes, this is all computer animation (you couldn't actually play something like this) but can you imagine the work that went into putting this together ... not just all the graphic work but getting the music to synchronize perfectly with the motion? Fascinating!
Wohr Multiparker (4:28) - This is one unique parking garage. If you want to see more versions, check out their web site. There are some really neat parking solutions.
World's Scariest Path (6:30) - No way I'd climb that path! This is in Spain. Takes a bit of nerve just to watch it. Can't imagine why the government doesn't fix it since it's apparently a popular area with mountain hikers. This is extremely dangerous! This guy must have been wearing a helmet camera as it takes all of two hands just to hang on in some of these places.

- Sometime In The Future (3:42)
- Modern Educayshun (7:20)
- The Privilege Game (8:29) - Note I originally posted this about one hour before the US election polls closed and Donald Trump became President - depending on the outcome (which we now know), the last card played might have had a different effect! [2021 Update: This video was made in 2016 however five years later it seemed more applicable to than it was then!]
Norwegian Royal Guard (8:27) - A military precision routine (and it's done on ice.)
